What is assisted hatching?

• Assisted hatching is an advanced scientific technique that involves using a laser to gently thin the outer shell of the egg (called the zona). In some cases, particularly in older women, it is thought that the thickness of the outer shell (zona) can impede implantation. If the embryo can ‘hatch’ out of the shell more easily, it may have a better chance of implanting inside the uterus.

Who is assisted hatching suitable for?

• Recent meta-analysis (comparison of different relevant research findings) showed that women who have undergone repeated IVF treatments without positive results can increase their chances of pregnancy with laser-assisted hatching.
• Women aged over 37
• Poor oocyte’s quality or low oocyte’s stocks in the ovaries (high FSH levels or low AMH)
• People who expereince more than 2 failed ivf cycles.

Poor Embryos’ Quality

How is Assisted Hatching Done?

• During Assisted Hatching, the embryo’s outer shell is artificially weakened due to making a hole in the zona pellucid. This can be done in different ways. One is the application of an acid solution called Tyrode’s solution to help to melt the small hole in the shell. Another one uses a laser to crack the shell.

Assisted Hatching Methods

Assisted hatching is always done in making a hole in zona pellucid. But this is not an actual method. There are few methods are available. Mechanical Hatching

• In this method, the embryologist keeps the embryo steady with the help of a pipette for puncturing the zona pellucid with the help of a needle. The needle underneath the shell for a bit and then come out at the other end. The area between these two punchers is robbed gently until a small tear happened.

Mechanical Expansion of a Shell

• In this method, the zona pellucid is not opened. Instead of a hole, the hydrostatic pressure is introduced under the shell for its expansion. This idea has come from the outer shell natural expansion during the laser hatching process.

Chemical Hatching

• In this technique, tyrode’s chemical is used. Small amounts of acid are applied to the zona pellucid until the shell is beaked. The embryo is cleaned quickly and avoids acid exposures.

Drilling

• In this method, vibratory movements are used for the opening of a conical. This technique uses Piezo technology.

Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)

• In this method, use a specialized laser to breach the zona pellucid. It controls the size of the hole created.

For all these methods, Laser Assisted Hatching is the safest and most effective method. However, it can be performed in a specific laboratory.

Laser Hatching Procedure

Laser hatching is a laboratory procedure. Sometimes laser hatching process is done along with IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) treatment. IVF involved in mixing the sperms and eggs in a laboratory. Eggs are fertilized when the sperm meets eggs. During the IVF procedure, the eggs are monitored in 3 or 6 days as they develop into embryos. The best embryo transfer into the woman’s uterus. If the embryo is developed, then it is surrounded by the cells to make up a protective shell called a zona pellucida. The embryo breaks out the shell when it has grown up. The fertility specialist may ask the laboratory to make a crack in the embryo’s outer shell before it is placed into the uterus. The hope is the embryo will expand and implant into the uterine wall. Finally, pregnancy happens.

The success rates of laser-assisted hatching are depended upon the woman’s age and other factors. Most research reported that laser assisted hatching improved clinical pregnancy rates than live birth rates. The laser hatching is done on good quality embryos.
